September 8 is a day of celebration for all physical therapists around the world as we celebrate World Physical Therapy Day. The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) announced this year's theme to be chronic pain and the role PTs have in managing it. WCPT has released a social media toolkit to inform everyone what chronic pain is about and how physical therapy can help.
Chronic pain is pain that usually remains for more than 3 months and that is usually caused by having “low back pain, cervical and thoracic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, shoulder pain, headache disorders, cancer, and fibromyalgia.” Through physical therapy, people with chronic pain can be helped to “develop the skills they need to manage and take control of their condition, increase their activity and improve their quality of life.” Through performing exercises, they can maintain their mobility, flexibility, strength, improve their cardiovascular function, mood, and general wellbeing that can help alleviate their pain experience.
